STORY TIMES

All story times begin the first week of October and adult accompaniment is required.

IMAGINATION STATION  Ages 2 - 5 years

Practice the skills that young children entering Kindergarten need to succeed. Listen to stories that develop literacy skills, do crafts that develop motor skills and learn new songs and rhymes to develop an awareness of phonics.

BABY TIME   Ages birth - 2 years

ING Branch | 10:30 - 11 am

Songs bouncing and tickling rhymes help develop babies' large and fine motor skills. Story time will be followed by free play. Expectant parents are welcome.

Turn off the cartoons and join us for fun with favourite songs, stories, puppets and rhymes. Story times help enrich your imagination and build a lifelong love of reading through language and social development.

 

CHESS FUN   Ages 6+

Come and play chess with your friends - or meet new ones! If you have a chess board, you are welcome to bring it. All levels of skill welcome! In December, Alton and Bolton chess members will face off in a Grand Master Chess Tournament. More details soon!

 

DO-WRITE CLUB   Ages 6 - 12 years

This is a FREE, drop-in program.

Tuesdays: October 4, 11, 18, 25; November 1, 8, 15, 22

AB Branch | 5 - 6 pm

This club brings together kids who like to write or would like to practice their writing skills. Do you have great stories going on inside your head and are just itching to share them? Or, do you have a great story to tell and just don't know where to start? This club will allow you the opportunity to brainstorm, create, draw and share all the things that inspire you.

 

 

 

MINECRAFT & VIDEO GAMES    Ages 6+

This is a FREE drop-in program.

Fridays: October 7 and November 18

AB Branch | 2 - 4 pm

Bring your friends to play Minecraft  on the PC or test out some new games on the PS4 or Xbox One game consoles. Please note: Children must have an understanding of Minecraft on the PC.

 

 

READING BUDDIES   

Ages 7 - 10 years

Reading Buddies is a FREE 8 week registered program for children to spend time each week reading aloud with a trained buddy. For more information about this program, please contact ys@caledon.library.on.ca; alternatively, Leo Scardicchio at 905-857-1400 ext. 239 by October 1.

Please note: the number of registrants accepted is dependent upon the number of available volunteers. First come, first served.

 

READING RANGERS    Ages 5 - 10 years

This program is FREE with advance registration

Thursdays: October 6, 13, 20, 27; November 10, 17, 24; December 1

AB Branch | 5:30 - 6:30 pm

This is a fun based activity program that encourages reading through discussion, activities and crafts. Children will explore the world through reading and hands-on study. Each week, they will choose an age and reading level-appropriate book to practice reading independently at home.

Please note: children must be able to read independently

 

SUNDAY MOVIE MATINEE    All Ages

Sundays: October 9, 16, 23, 30; l  November 6, 13, 20, 27

AB Branch | 2 - 4 pm | FREE drop-in

Movies, freshly popped popcorn, friends and family ... a great way to enjoy a Sunday afternoon. All movies will be rated PG or PG-13 and titles will be available on our website 1 week prior to screening. Adult accompaniment is required.                                      Allergy Alert

 

WRITE TO THE TROOPS    All Ages

October 8 - November 11

Stop by any branch of the library and show your support for the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces by writing a letter or designing a postcard with a short note to be sent to our troops overseas.

 

LEGO CLUB     All Ages

Watch your LEGO volcano erupt, build the biggest castle or complete a timed building challenge. Each week we will explore a different structure that can be built using LEGO and Mega Bloks. The activities in this program are designed for children ages 5 - 10 years; however, those under 5 are welcome to participate with adult accompaniment

Create a unique painting while experimenting with colours and silhouettes. All skill levels welcome.

SPOOKY SILHOUETTE ART

Get in the Hallowe'en spirit as we paint some spooky silhouette art depicting ghost filled haunted houses.

BLEEDING TISSUE PAPER ART

Add colour to fall by creating a vivid scene using tissue paper.

STRAW PAINTING

We're back in the kitchen and trying our hand at new recipes. Tonight we'll be cooking up some delicious bacon and egg waffle sandwiches.

Traditionally a breakfast treat, we'll find out that pancakes are quick and easy to make and can be enjoyed any time of the day.

 

HACKER LAB: EYE SPY

Create a Walter Wick-inspired "I Spy" book with a theme. Build miniature sets from objects provided for photo shoots. From the photographed sets, we will write rhymes for the text of the illustrated, collaborative book. Digital cameras will be provided or bring your own.

Goin' on a ghost hunt...gonna catch a spooky one...we're not scared...are you?

HACKER LAB: HOUR OF STAR WARS EDITION

Learn basic concepts of coding and computer science with fun game-like tutorials featuring characters from Star Wars. At the end of the hour, you should be able to construct your own mini computer game.

DIY Balloon Race Cars

Learn simple axel and wheel techniques and work either individually or with friends to build your own balloon racers. Test out your new creation on a racetrack!

Offline Minecraft

You can evade creeper and endermen, mine for supplies and build the biggest and strongest house in Minecraft ... but what is Minecraft were real? Use your skills to navigate through an obstacle course to collect building material, build a sturdy shelter for protection and escape some zombies in the Steve vs Zombies game.

YOUTH VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION    Ages 12+

Sundays: October 16 and November 20

AB Branch | 12:30 - 2 pm

This program matches youth with a variety of engaging, age-appropriate volunteer opportunities throughout the year at all branches. Students must attend volunteer orientation in order to volunteer with the library.

 

All students interested in volunteering must send an email to  ysvolunteers@caledon.library.on.ca one week prior to registration.

Please note: registrations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis; all participants must have a parent/guardian present for first 30 minutes of orientation.

 

TAG: TEEN ADVISORY GROUP    Ages 12 - 17

Are you between the ages of 12 and 17? Do you want to earn community hours, build relationship skills and meet new teens in your community? Be sure to join CPL’s TAG (Teen Advisory Group) where you can suggest/implement additions or changes to our teen collections as well as recommend teen programs and events. YOUNG REELS FILM FESTIVAL    Grades 9 - 12

Every year, CPL invites youth in high school to create short films in any genre. Prizes are awarded in a  
variety of categories. This contest culminates in a special screening of all films, bringing together all participants, teachers, mentors, friends, family and  CPL staff.  SUBMISSION DEADLINE is Wednesday, February 1, 2017. Submit today!
