1. If elected to Council, what would be your top priority, and how will you address it?
Yogi Chahal:

Hunar Kahlon: Safer roads and communities will be my absolute top priority alongside delivering maximum value for the residents’ tax dollars. I have already initiated conversations with different levels of government as well as the OPP. I will also strongly fight to bring a two-year residential property tax freeze.

2. How have your education, skills and experiences prepared you for the role of Councillor?

Hunar Kahlon: Being a business owner, I am well equipped to ensure responsible spending and return on investments. Over the years, my community work (Lions, Humanity Sewa, Caledon Seniors’ Centre, Caledon South Asian Association) has prepared me to listen to community needs and deliver workable solutions.

3. How does the use of Strong Mayor Powers impact the role of Council? How will you move your priorities forward in a Strong Mayor environment?

Hunar Kahlon: As a councillor, I will stay vigilant to ensure that these powers are not used to push through decisions that negatively impact Ward 2 residents. I am a team player focused on putting Caledon first.

4. How will you balance the needs of your own ward(s) with the needs of the Town as a whole?

Hunar Kahlon: Caledon is one unit, one team. We have ward councillors to ensure micro issues are understood well and that the local perspective is brought forward and shared with other team members to find the best way forward.

5. How will you balance maintaining affordable property taxes while investing in the services and infrastructure residents rely on?
Yogi Chahal:

Hunar Kahlon: We need to diversify our tax base and identify new revenue streams to ensure we keep residential property taxes low. Developers need to share the cost of infrastructure so that it does not come at the cost of delivering essential services to the residents.

6. How will you manage growth while protecting Caledon’s agricultural lands, natural environment and water table?
Yogi Chahal:

Hunar Kahlon: Only areas which are designated for development should be accommodating growth, everything else should remain off limits. Growth cannot come at the cost of Caledon’s rural character.

7. How will you keep residents informed and engaged, ensuring transparency and accountability at Town Hall?

Hunar Kahlon: Constant communication to ensure that the residents are consulted before any major decision and its impact on the community. I will make sure that I listen and act on the feedback from those I represent.

8. What is one challenge facing Caledon that you believe deserves more attention? How will you move this forward?

Hunar Kahlon: We border major cities and crime often overflows into Caledon. Road and community safety deserves utmost attention and as stated earlier, I am already actively advocating on residents’ behalf with all levels of government and the OPP.

9. How will residents know whether you have been successful at the end of your four-year term?

10. Is there anything else that you would like voters to know about you or your priorities for Caledon?

Hunar Kahlon: Even after coming up short in the 2022 election, I did not abandon the post. I have been a consistent voice advocating for the community and if given the chance I will be work much harder to ensure Ward 2 and Caledon’s interests are protected always.
